Tesla Windshield Haze:
Why It Happens, How to Fix It
That film that turns oncoming headlights into starbursts builds on every Tesla windshield. Here's what it is, whether yours is inside or outside, and how to remove it cleanly.
Tesla windshields are enormous, steeply raked, and sit directly above a large expanse of dark plastic that bakes in the sun. That geometry makes them haze magnets. Most owners first notice it at night, when oncoming headlights bloom into glare, or driving west on a low Austin sun. The fix is simple once you know which side the haze is on.

First: Inside or Outside?
Run a clean, dry fingertip across the glass in the hazy zone, inside and out. The side where your finger leaves a visible clean streak is the side with the film. Most of the time, it's the inside.
If both sides streak, clean the outside first. You can't judge interior glass through a dirty exterior.

The Interior Film: Where It Comes From
Interior haze is a thin oily layer with two main sources.
- Plastic off-gassing. Dashboard and trim plastics release volatile compounds as they heat up, and Austin cabins routinely pass 130°F in summer. Those compounds condense on the coolest nearby surface: your glass. The film re-forms continuously, which is why the windshield hazes back up weeks after you clean it.
- Recirculated cabin oils. Skin oils, cooking smells brought in on clothing, anything aerosolized in the cabin ends up in a thin layer on the glass, concentrated where the defroster blows.
Make It Worse Faster
Glossy silicone dressings on the dash accelerate the film dramatically. The shine you wipe on the dashboard in May is the haze on your windshield in June. Use water-based interior protectants only.

Cleaning the Inside Correctly
The raked windshield makes the base of the glass genuinely hard to reach. Work smarter, not deeper:
- Use two microfiber towels. One damp with glass cleaner to lift the film, one bone dry to buff. One-towel cleaning just redistributes the oil.
- Spray the towel, not the glass. Overspray on the dash and camera housing area is avoidable mess.
- Use an ammonia-free glass cleaner. Ammonia formulas can degrade tint and are harsh near interior surfaces.
- Work in straight overlapping passes, then buff dry immediately. Streaks are almost always cleaner residue that dried before buffing.
- For the deep base of the glass, a flat-headed glass tool with a microfiber bonnet reaches where your arm can't. Cleaning the bottom three inches is what separates a decent job from a clear one.
Section 04
Exterior Haze Is a Different Problem
If the fingertip test points outside, you're dealing with one of these:
- Wiper smear. Worn blades drag contamination in an arc across your sightline. Blades are consumables. In Austin UV they harden within a year.
- Hard water film. Sprinkler overspray and water-spotted rain dry into a mineral layer. Regular glass cleaner won't touch established mineral film. See the Austin hard water guide for removal.
- Bonded traffic film. Exhaust residue and road grime that survives a normal wash. A dedicated glass polish removes it and restores the slick surface water beads off of.
Section 05
Keep It Clear
- Interior glass quarterly. The off-gassing never stops, so the schedule can't either. Quarterly keeps the film below the visible threshold.
- Wiper blades annually. Cheap, and the single biggest exterior clarity upgrade.
- No silicone shine products on the dash. Ever.
- Windshield sunshade in summer. Lower dash temperatures mean slower off-gassing. Your glass stays clear longer and your interior plastics age slower, which we cover in the vegan leather guide.
