Austin sits on limestone, and our water carries the evidence: hardness that varies by utility but commonly tests between 150 and 300 ppm across the metro's systems and MUDs, in the hard to very hard bands of the USGS hardness scale. Water hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, and Austin's limestone aquifer geology loads our water with both. When a drop dries on paint or glass, the water evaporates and the minerals stay, bonded to the surface in a white ring. One ring is nothing. Hard water damage comes in two stages, and everything about removal depends on which you have.
Stage 1: surface deposit. The mineral ring sits on top of the paint or glass. Catch it here and removal is chemical and easy.
Stage 2: etching. Left in the sun, the mineral spot concentrates as it dries and begins etching into Tesla's clear coat, leaving a crater you can feel as a faint depression even after the mineral is gone. Etching isn't cleaned off. It's polished out, which means removing clear coat, which is a professional decision. Austin heat compresses the timeline from stage 1 to stage 2 to days, not months.
