Tesla Care Guide

Tesla Paint Colors:
Which Are Hardest to Maintain.

Most Tesla color advice comes from people who've owned one car. This guide comes from detailing hundreds of them. Every Tesla color has a different maintenance profile — different swirl mark visibility, different water spot behavior, different response to Austin's UV and pollen. Here's the honest breakdown.

Color-by-Color Breakdown

Pearl White Multi-Coat
The most common Tesla in Austin
Difficulty
2/5
The most forgiving daily-driver color Tesla makes. The multi-coat pearl formula has excellent self-masking properties — light swirl marks from improper washing scatter rather than reflect, making them significantly less visible than on dark colors. The trade-off is a slightly chalky look when dirty.
Strengths Hides swirl marks and light scratches well. Dramatic improvement with any level of care — goes from chalky to brilliant with a single wash. Doesn't show brake dust on paint panels. Bird droppings show but don't contrast as harshly as on dark paint.
Weaknesses Shows yellow tinge over time in Austin's UV without regular cleaning. Cedar and oak pollen creates visible yellowish haze on white paint. Water spots create a mineral haze rather than distinct rings — harder to spot early but cumulative.
Austin tip: The pollen haze that develops on Pearl White during cedar and oak season can look like oxidation — it's not. A thorough iron decontamination wash in late February restores the clean white look.
Stealth Grey
Available on Cybertruck · Matte finish
Difficulty
2/5
Stealth Grey's matte finish is the most low-maintenance paint finish from a visual standpoint — but requires the most specific care protocol. It hides contamination and swirl marks almost completely, but matte paint cannot be treated with any traditional wax, sealant, or ceramic product formulated for gloss paint.
Strengths Swirl marks and light scratches essentially invisible. Contamination blends into the texture. No need for polishing. Never loses gloss because it doesn't have any.
Weaknesses Matte-specific product requirement — standard waxes and ceramic coatings make matte paint look patchy and uneven. Bird droppings must be removed immediately — the porous surface absorbs staining faster than gloss paint. Cannot use clay bar on matte.
Stealth Grey requires matte-specific detailing spray and matte-specific sealant. Do not let any detailer treat it with standard products — the finish is permanently altered by gloss-enhancing products.
Midnight Silver Metallic
Discontinued on some models — still common in Austin
Difficulty
3/5
Midnight Silver looks spectacular when clean and maintained. The metallic flake gives it depth that Pearl White doesn't have. But the medium-dark silver tone sits in a difficult visual range — dark enough to show swirl marks in direct sun, light enough that water spots create high-contrast white mineral rings.
Strengths Metallic flake partially masks light swirling. Scratches less visible than deep blue or black. Shows dirt gradually rather than dramatically. Water spots visible early so you catch them before Stage 2.
Weaknesses Hard water mineral rings very visible against the silver tone. Cedar pollen creates a visible yellow-grey haze in January. Swirl marks visible in direct sun — particularly the kind left by automatic car washes.
If you have Midnight Silver in Austin: ceramic spray sealant is not optional. The hydrophobic layer prevents the hard water rings that show so clearly on this color.
Deep Blue Metallic
One of the highest-maintenance colors Tesla offers
Difficulty
4/5
Deep Blue is the most visually spectacular Tesla color on a freshly detailed car. It is also the hardest to keep that way. Dark blue paint shows swirl marks in virtually any light — not just direct sun like black — and water spots against deep blue create high-contrast white rings that are visible from 20 feet.
Strengths Extraordinary depth and visual impact when clean. Metallic flake provides slightly more swirl resistance than solid black. Bird droppings and pollen very visible early — forces prompt attention.
Weaknesses Shows every swirl mark, water spot, and bird dropping. Cedar and oak pollen creates a particularly stark yellow-on-blue contrast. Hard water spots very visible. Brake dust on rocker panels shows clearly. Requires more frequent washing than any other color to maintain appearance.
Deep Blue owners need bi-weekly washing during Austin's pollen seasons and ceramic spray sealant maintained quarterly without exception. Consider PPF on the hood and roof if you park outside regularly.
Ultra Red
Previously Multi-Coat Red
Difficulty
3/5
Red sits in the middle of the difficulty range. Swirl marks are visible but less dramatically than on blue or black. Water spots show but don't contrast as starkly. The bigger concern with red in Austin is UV fading — red pigment is particularly vulnerable to UV oxidation, and Austin's summer UV accelerates this significantly.
Strengths Swirl marks less visible than on dark blue. Moderate water spot visibility. Cedar pollen less stark against red than against blue or black.
Weaknesses UV fading is the primary risk — red pigment oxidizes under sustained UV, shifting toward an orange or faded look. Austin's summer UV is extreme enough to cause visible fading in 3–4 years on unprotected paint. Regular ceramic sealant with UV inhibitors is essential.
Ceramic spray with UV protection (not just hydrophobic) is the priority for Ultra Red. Products like 303 Aerospace Protectant work for trim — for the paint itself, use a sealant specifically rated for UV blocking. Reapply every quarter in Austin.
Obsidian Black
The most demanding Tesla paint in Austin
Difficulty
5/5
Black is the most demanding color in any car brand's lineup, and Tesla's soft clear coat makes it more challenging than most. Every swirl mark, every water spot, every fingerprint, every bird dropping is immediately and dramatically visible. A black Tesla that went through one tunnel wash will show swirl marks in direct sun. A black Tesla that was never washed properly looks catastrophic.
Strengths When properly maintained and detailed, nothing else looks as dramatic. Black paint with ceramic protection and zero swirl marks is extraordinary. High visual feedback makes it easy to know when the car needs attention.
Weaknesses Shows absolutely everything. Surface temperature is highest of any color — exacerbating bird dropping etch, water spot etching, and UV degradation in Austin summer. Cedar pollen visible immediately. Swirl marks from a single improper wash visible in multiple light conditions.
Black Tesla owners in Austin: professional ceramic coating (not just spray) is the only way to make this color manageable long-term. Without a hard coating, you will spend twice as much time and money on maintenance as any other color. The coating cost pays for itself in reduced correction work within 2–3 years.

Choosing a Color — What to Consider

If you're ordering a new Tesla or choosing between used vehicles and maintenance effort matters to you:

Easiest to maintain in Austin: Pearl White Multi-Coat. Most forgiving, most common, most available supply of matching touch-up paint. The $1,000–2,000 color upgrade for metallic options costs more over time in additional maintenance than it costs up front.

Best looking when maintained correctly: Obsidian Black. Nothing else comes close when properly cared for. But "properly cared for" means professional-grade protection and monthly attention.

Best hidden compromise: Stealth Grey. Essentially zero maintenance from a swirl and water spot standpoint — as long as you use matte-specific products and never let a general detailer near it with standard products.

Austin
Local Consideration

Austin's combination of hard water, cedar pollen, live oak tannins, and extreme UV makes every color harder to maintain than national guides suggest. Add one difficulty level to any color when assessing for Austin specifically. Pearl White becomes moderate. Midnight Silver becomes hard. Deep Blue and Obsidian Black become very demanding — monthly professional attention is practically required to keep them looking right.
