You get in, the AC kicks on, and for the first thirty seconds the air smells like a gym bag. Then it fades and you forget about it until tomorrow. That startup smell is the signature of evaporator mildew, and in a climate where the AC runs ten months a year, nearly every car develops it eventually. It's fixable, and prevention costs nothing.
Every time your AC runs, the evaporator coil condenses moisture out of the cabin air. That's how it dehumidifies. The evaporator sits inside a dark, enclosed housing behind the dash, and when the system shuts off, a wet coil sits in a warm dark box. Mildew and bacteria colonize the coil surface and the condensation drain path.
The smell is strongest at startup because the first airflow carries the accumulated microbial byproducts off the coil. Once air is moving continuously, the concentration drops and the smell fades. That fade is why owners live with it for months.
Two local factors stack against you:
Add a cabin filter loaded with cedar and oak pollen feeding the system organic material, and you have ideal growth conditions.
Work bottom up. Most cars are fixed at step one or two.
Step 1: Replace the cabin air filter. A saturated filter is both a smell source itself and a food supply for everything downstream. Model 3 and Model Y use a two-filter set behind the glovebox area, and Tesla publishes a DIY procedure. If the smell drops significantly after a filter change, you caught it early.
Step 2: Treat the evaporator. An HVAC evaporator foam cleaner, applied per its instructions so it reaches the coil housing, kills the colony and rinses residue down the condensation drain. This is the step that resolves the classic startup smell. Pair it with the filter change, not instead of it. A clean coil behind a dirty filter recolonizes in weeks.
Step 3: Service-level cleaning. If the smell survives steps one and two, the growth is established deep in the housing or the drain path is partially blocked and pooling condensation. At that point it's a job for Tesla Service or a specialist. A blocked drain is worth fixing quickly regardless of smell, because that water has to go somewhere.
